This special issue of Shape Memory and Superelasticity is dedicated to Professor Kazuhiro Otsuka on the occasion of his 85th birthday to commemorate his research on shape memory alloys spanning 50 years. Professor Kazuihiro Otsuka is an outstanding and respected scientist in the martensite and shape memory community. He has worked on shape memory alloys since 1966 and has made significant contributions to the understanding of shape memory’s effect and superelasticity, together with the crystallography of martensitic transformation in various shape memory alloys. He has published more than 280 original papers, 50 review papers, and 30+ books/book chapters. He is one of the most cited authors in the martensite community, with over 33,000 citations according to Google Scholar (as of October 1, 2022). His monumental review on TiNi shape memory alloys [K. Otsuka and X. Ren, Prog. Mater. Sci., 50 (5), 511–678 (2005)] has received a staggering 4000+ citations. These objective numbers clearly reflect the huge contributions and the enormous impact that Prof. Otsuka has made in the martensite and shape memory communities.
