Abstract

N-Hexadecylacrylamide with long hydrophobic groups was reacted with acrylamide and methacrylic acid to prepare the hydrophobically modified terpolymers based on polyacrylamide (HMPAM) for polymer flooding. The HMPAM polymer was synthesized by adjusting the polymerization conditions such as initiator concentration, time, and monomer ratios. The structure of the obtained terpolymer was characterized by IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results of DSC and TGA analyses revealed that the hydrophobic modification of polymer backbone enhanced the rigidity and thermal stability of the polymer. The rheological properties of the polymers were evaluated over a wide range of parameters. The results indicated that the HMPAM displayed a better performance on viscosification, interfacial tension, and salt, temperature, and shear resistance than the copolymer without hydrophobic groups (COPAM). Core flood tests showed that oil recovery could be enhanced by about 10.23 % for HMPAM versus only 4.9 % for the COPAM under equal condition of 1000 mg/L polymer.
