Innovative Approaches to Integrated Floodplain Management

The results presented in this paper correspond largely to the contribution given by the authors to a research project funded by the European Commission under the Environment Programme, titled EUROFlood. The EUROFlood project has been concerned with flood hazard assessment, modelling and management. As such it was involved in determining the nature, extent and severity of flood hazards across the European Union countries, by collecting data on these hazards and modelling their likely future patterns. In addition, however, EUROFlood was also concerned with investigating methods for better management of hazards and populations vulnerable to hazardous events, so as to reduce vulnerability and enhance the use of floodplain areas.
