Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
You are about to learn the basics of retrieving SAP SuccessFactors data using free-to-use tools. In this chapter, we will lay the foundation of the rest of the book by connecting to SAP SuccessFactors and retrieving some job requisitions. We’ll be using ODATA and the REST protocol. This chapter will begin by describing SOAP web services vs. ODATA and REST.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 2. Requisition Create and Update Automation
Abstract
In Chapter 1, we walked you through the basics of making ODATA calls. In this chapter, we walk you through the first practical application of making those calls in the recruiting process: requisition creation. We start by walking you through some practical business scenarios that might trigger the need to build such an automation. Then we review the relevant SAP SuccessFactors ODATA API objects you would use to construct such an automation. Last, we put all you’ve learned thus far to walk you through two case studies. Let’s get started!
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 3. Requisition Automation Using Middleware
Abstract
In Chapter 2, we walked through the automated creation and update of requisitions using Integration Center. Integration Center is great for simple use cases without complex logic. It’s also a great tool for testing and troubleshooting ODATA calls before sharing with colleagues that are integrating from non-SAP SuccessFactors applications. When the requirement for updates goes beyond simple calculations, we need to look at other tools.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 4. Candidate Attraction
Abstract
In the previous chapter, we looked at how automation tools can be used to reduce the time that recruiters spend on admin tasks like adding the same application questions to a requisition again and again. One of the goals of recruiting technology is to free up recruiter time to better engage with future employees. Chapter 5 will discuss engagement of candidates on the career site, how to automatically interact with site visitors and applicants once they have taken the first step and visited the site and given some information about themselves. What about bringing visitors to the site in the first place? In this chapter, we will look at how to bring visitors to your career site, either directly to postings or to specific content. In this chapter, we will look at how to bring visitors to your career site, either directly to postings or to specific content.

Chapter 5. Enhancing Candidate Engagement
Abstract
In the last chapter, we learned how to enhance the posting capabilities of SAP SuccessFactors. We now take a look at the next step in the process, candidate engagement. Candidate engagement describes the process of increasing candidate participation in your recruiting activities. In other words, once you have marketed the jobs you have available, how do you help maximize the number of qualified candidates who apply to those postings? If candidates do not see a posting that interests them, how do you keep their interest until the right job posting is available? In this chapter, we explore strategies and tools for increasing candidate engagement before stepping through the practical case study of building a chatbot.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 6. Robotic Process Automation
Abstract
In this chapter, we will cover the basics of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and how you can use the techniques to improve or enhance your SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting implementations.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 7. Automation Using Integration Center
Abstract
One of the goals of recruiting technology is to free up recruiter time from low-value administrative tasks to better engage with future employees. Recruiting is ripe for automation. In the previous chapter, we looked at how Robotic Process Automation (RPA) tools can be used to reduce the time that recruiters spend on administrative tasks, like adding the same application questions to a requisition again and again. RPA is driven by a predictable set of actions that a user performs, based on rules. Where RPA leverages the user interface of the application to automate processes by replicating user actions, Integration Center uses back-end API calls to affect changes. In this Chapter, we walk you though how to setup such calls step-by-step.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 8. Assessment Integration Framework
Abstract
In the last few chapters, we’ve covered how to automate your SAP SuccessFactors system during candidate evaluation. In this chapter, we focus on how to integrate with assessment vendors. The industry has a multitude of assessment vendors to serve the needs of customers geographically, for specific job positions and industries with proprietary implementations. SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting has defined a framework that abstracts the implementation details of each vendor and provides a standard way to integrate. Assessment vendors can help companies greatly in choosing the most qualified candidates in a timely manner using standardized tests tailor-made for specific job positions and incorporating assessments within the applicant workflow. Adding an assessment vendor frees up a recruiter’s time to focus on the application process itself by delegating the task to different assessment vendors.

Chapter 9. Additional Custom ODATA Integrations
Abstract
The first part of this chapter will describe the context of when to use SAP SuccessFactors ODATA APIs when working with other solutions within the recruiting industry. The rest of the chapter will be used to explore additional ODATA use cases.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 10. Background Check Integration
Abstract
Background checks are an integral part of any company’s recruiting system. These checks are incorporated into the overall recruiting workflow and typically initiated just before the candidate is given a firm job offer, although some customers might prefer to conduct these checks just before the actual hire. Automating the background check integration greatly simplifies the overall recruiting process and frees up a recruiter’s resource to focus on the hiring process.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 11. Candidate Offer Automation Using Business Rules
Abstract
As we have progressed throughout the book, we’ve shown you a variety of integration and automation methods at each stage of the recruiting process. Thus far, each chapter of this book has focused on an integration or automation that involves a third-party system, creating a file, or making/receiving an external call. However, there are some automations that can be executed entirely within the SuccessFactors system. As we approach the offer stage of the recruiting process, we take this opportunity to review such automations since creating an offer is less likely to require integration (outside of standard integrations such as document signature). A prime example of these types of internal automations is business rules. Let’s take a look!
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 12. Intelligent Services
Abstract
Enterprise applications have been in use for a long time, and as time has progressed, the need to integrate has become central to any enterprise application. In the 1990s, the primary mechanism for extracting data and adding data was FTP and its recent variant Secure FTP. With the advent of Java as a programming language in the mid-1990s, messaging has been part and parcel of the programming language, primarily Java Message Queue. Over time, this methodology has spread to several enterprise applications including SuccessFactors.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 13. Hiring Integration with Non-SAP Systems
Abstract
We’ve made it to the end of the recruiting process. Now there’s one final step left – hire the candidate! However, if we are not using the standard integrations with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central or SAP HCM On-Premise, how can we integrate the hiring process? In this chapter, we explore the relevant data and tools available to set up this automation.
Anand ‘Andy’ Athanur, Mark Ingram, Michael A. Wellens
Chapter 14. Conclusion
Abstract
We hope you have enjoyed your journey with us across each step of the recruiting process. Along the way, we’ve shown you various integration and automation opportunities as well as practical implementation scenarios that provide real business value. Let’s take a moment to review what you’ve learned.
