It is a challenging work for transmitting the highly detailed surfaces interactively to meet real time requirement of the large-scale model visualization from clients. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to interactive transmission of highly detailed surfaces according to the viewpoint. We firstly map the 3D surfaces onto the parameter space through surface parametrization, and the
geometry images
(GIM) and normal map atlas are obtained by regular re-sampling. Then the quadtree-based hierarchical representation can be constructed based on GIM. Since the hierarchical structure is regular, an efficient compression scheme can be applied to encode the structure and vertices of its nodes. The encoded nodes can be transmitted in arbitrary order, so the extreme flexibility in transmission could be achieved. By taking advantage of normal texture atlas, the rendering result of the partial transmitted model is improved greatly, and then only the geometry on the silhouette to the current viewpoint need be refined and transmitted, and so the amount of data needed to transfer each frame is greatly reduced.
