Toyota is not giving up on the internal combustion engine: Partner Yamaha Motor has now received an order to develop a 5.0-l V8 gasoline engine for use with hydrogen.
Yamaha began developing a hydrogen engine for automobiles about five years ago. The V8 hydrogen engine now presented is based on the 5.0-l engine of the Lexus RC F luxury sports coupe. Among other things, the injection nozzles, the cylinder heads or even the intake manifold have been modified for use with hydrogen. The combustion engine produces up to 331 kW (450 PS) at 6800 rpm and a maximum torque of 540 Nm at 3600 rpm.
In Japan, Toyota Motor Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Subaru Corporation, Mazda Motor Corporation and Yamaha Motor plan to work together to expand the range of fuel options for internal combustion engines. “We are working toward becoming carbon neutral by 2050,” said Yamaha Motor President Yoshihiro Hidaka. “At the same time, ‘engine’ is in our company name and, accordingly, we have a great passion and commitment to the internal combustion engine.”
