Hydrogen start-up Keyou belongs to the European Union's Horizon 2020 funding programme. The EU is now a Keyou shareholder and has taken on a part of the Series A investment round.
A project funded by the EU is developing and building a lorry powered by a hydrogen engine made by Keyou. The project also aims to industrialise and commercialise hydrogen combustion engines. "We want to use the funds to further develop our technology and get the first prototype onto the roads as quickly as possible," says Thomas Korn, CEO and co-founder of Keyou. He also sees the EU's investment in Keyou as a political signal for hydrogen combustion engines.
The European Innovation Council sees Keyou and its technology as positioned "in the right place at the right time to be able to change the mobility market and to develop the transport market in the direction of the hydrogen economy, particularly considering the new aims of the Green Deal." As a zero-carbon fuel, hydrogen represents the basis for a new generation of environmentally friendly combustion engines.
