John Copper’s book examines the gradual ascendancy of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and how its policy might jeopardize the opportunity to pursue the peaceful relationship with China. Copper begins by giving a historical overview on how democratic elections have evolved from the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945) to the Nationalist era (1959–1980). The Japanese did not allow Taiwanese to participate in the elections, but the Nationalist Party dominated the political scene from 1949 to the late 1970s after the re-establishment of the Republic of China (ROC) government in Taiwan at the end of the Chinese Civil War (1945–1949). …
