Ng and He’s book is the recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Book Award of Asian Law and Society Association and a runner-up of the 2019 ICON•S Book Prize of the International Society of Public Law. It is a book about the growing heterogeneity and transformation of the Chinese court system, in relation to the nature of China’s party-state and the changing social, political, and economic environment. It contributes to the scholarship of Chinese courts in two ways. The first, as stated by co-authors, is its “systematic analysis about the precise character of this transformation and the underlying causes of the transformation” (p.29). The second, which I consider underappreciated, is the new analytical concepts of two types, or “hemispheres,” of courts: work-unit courts and firm courts. …
