In December 2022, a friend was hesitant about which of the two countries he holds the nationality to support in a one-on-one FIFA World Cup game. I asked him who was he willing to support if it was a matter of existence, and it was not surprising he was categorical: his homeland is the land of his roots and that of his ancestors. Categorical commitment to the existential cause is the expression of emotional belonging and spiritual devotion which results from the superimposition of many superior non-negotiable values that people are wholly fused with. …
