Über dieses Buch

This book explores demographic changes in Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) in Poland since 1990. Functional Urban Areas, introduced by ESPON, refer to functional territorial units that can be defined as travel-to-work-area, representing strong integration between urban cores and their immediate hinterland. The functional urban area consists of a city plus its commuting zone. It fills a significant gap in the academic literature by providing a deep and thorough analysis of the process of population change in Polish FUAs over the past 30 years. In particular, this empirical research work addresses population growth and decline; the main components of population growth including fertility, mortality and migration; age composition; and the pace of population ageing.

The book argues that the transformations of urban structures are triggered by second demographic transition (SDT) and suburbanization processes. Based on data from the Central Statistical Office, this comparative study on FUAs in Poland, which employs a division into core and commuting zones, reveals essential similarities and differences in population development, making it possible to construct a demographic typology of FUAs and investigate their spatial arrangements. A unique and innovative book, it will appeal to geographers, demographers, urbanists, city planners and policymakers, as well as students, academic researchers and others involved in urban studies.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
The short background of socio-economic transition in Poland after 1990 and associated demographic changes will be presented. Also the idea of delineation of Functional Urban Areas in Europe and in Poland will be shown according to its criteria. The role of FUAs in Poland in integrity of socio-economic organisation in urban space will be addressed and the necessity of developing the knowledge on demographic changes in urban regions will be debated. The data and methods of the study will be presented.

Chapter 2. Functional Urban Areas—Theoretical Background
Abstract
This chapter explores the theoretical insight behind the concept of functional regions as areas that integrate cities into their immediate hinterland. The literature on urban development from a demographic context will also be explored, including a wide ranging literature overview on population processes, namely the second demographic transition and residential suburbanisation.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 3. Population Growth in Functional Urban Areas
Abstract
This chapter presents an analysis of population change of FUAs in Poland against other municipalities. It analyses differences in population growth or decline between city cores and commuting zones of FUAs. In addition, the study shows trends in population change by size and location of FUAs.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 4. Regional Variation of Age Composition in Functional Urban Areas
Abstract
The aim of the chapter is to show the regional differences in the age composition of the FUA population. The research also aimed at showing the relationships between the size of the FUAs and the age composition of its inhabitants. The chapter also investigates the differences in age dependencies against non-FUAs areas, including peripheral regions.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 5. The Population Ageing Process in Functional Urban Areas
Abstract
The chapter will analyse the ageing of the population at the various hierarchical levels of FUAs. The research aims to determine the impact of demographic potential and the size of FUAs on the pace of population ageing in both the core and the external zones. This chapter also explores the impact of suburbanisation processes on differences in the speed of population ageing within the cores and external zones of FUAs.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 6. Changes in Fertility and Mortality in Functional Urban Areas
Abstract
This chapter presents the natural population change in FUAs in the years 1990–2016. In particular, changes in the number of births, deaths, marriages, divorces as well as total natural increase will be investigated in FUAs and other Polish municipalities and according to the size of FUAs. Changes in fertility and marriages/divorces will be examined in association with the spread of the Second Demographic Transition in FUAs in both the cores and the commuting zones.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 7. Changes in Migrations in Functional Urban Areas
Abstract
The chapter will analyse the changes in the intensity and directions of migration in FUAs in the years 1990–2016. More specifically, the directions of population migration from and to the cores/commuting zones according to the size of FUAs will be explored (including total and subperiods). It is assumed, that migrations in FUAs play an increasingly important role in population distribution in Poland. According to migration patterns the phenomenon of suburbanisation and reurbanisation in FUAs will be examined depending on the size of the FUA.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 8. Typology of FUAs with the Use of k-Means Clustering
Abstract
This chapter deals with a typology of FUAs selected on the basis of methods of k-means clustering. The typology was constructed with the use of the following variables: population growth rate, natural growth rate, net migration rate, elderly dependency ratio and the economic ageing index. Eight clusters were distinguished and named according to dominating variables. The typology also takes into account the division of functional urban areas into cores and commuting zones. Spatial patterns of demographic developments of FUAs were distinguished.
Sławomir Kurek, Mirosław Wójtowicz, Jadwiga Gałka
Chapter 9. Conclusions
Abstract
In the summary, the model of migration patterns and diffusive suburbanization processes in FUAs will be presented against the changes associated with the second demographic transition. The proposed model of population distribution in FUAs will be referred to overall transformations in Central Eastern Europe.
