Abstract
Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted via ticks, has spread rapidly through many parts of the United States. Unfortunately, a scientific consensus about the mechanisms leading to its spread has been slow to emerge. The activity in this chapter offers students the opportunity to assess the Lyme disease debate with primary literature using a jigsaw group discussion format. In addition, students should deepen their knowledge of ecological concepts related to populations, predator–prey dynamics, trophic cascades, parasite ecology, and competition. After completing this activity, students should be able to (1) summarize, interpret, and critique a scientific article and explain it to others; (2) synthesize findings across scientific articles to identify research gaps; (3) propose hypotheses about Lyme disease ecology; and (4) propose Lyme disease mitigation strategies.
