Über dieses Buch

Introducing a theory of workplace dignity into the field of management studies, this innovative new book presents an alternative paradigm based on principles of human dignity which is integrated into a theoretical approach to the topic. The author addresses and analyses the causes and consequences of the dominant political-economic paradigm within management studies. Further, it presents a theoretical alternative which can constitute a foundation for a new way of thinking about organisations, management, and leadership. Dignity in the Workplace offers scholars ideas for how research in the field of management studies may be enriched by a dignity-paradigm, and goes further to explore the role of a dignity-paradigm in the function of HR-managers and organisational leaders. Thus, the book aims to contribute to the need for alternative conceptualisations of how contemporary organisations can be managed.

Chapter 1. Introduction to Workplace Dignity
Abstract
Bal introduces the theory of workplace dignity through exploring why there is a need for alternatives in management. Through systematically analysing eleven trends in society affecting the current state of management studies, Bal shows the urgency to present alternative paradigms in management on the basis of the consequences of neoliberalism, individualization and other factors. Hence, the aim of the current book is to present a theory through which management can contribute to fairer, more decent and more dignified organizations, economies and societies.

Chapter 2. A Review of Human Dignity
Abstract
Bal presents an overview of conceptualization and theory on dignity. The chapter discusses the various ways in which dignity has been defined across history, and in particular discusses the role of Kantian notions of dignity, as this has been most influential on contemporary ideas around dignity. However, it also devotes specific attention to other conceptualizations across the world. It also discusses existing critiques on dignity, such as Steven Pinker, and formulates a preliminary answer to why dignity is important. The chapter finishes with an overview of dignity uses in the management literature.

Chapter 3. Towards a Theory of Workplace Dignity
Abstract
This chapter introduces a theory of workplace dignity, on the basis of the combination of two perspectives. First, a Daoist perspective on dignity postulates that not only humans have dignity, but everything on earth. Second, a Kantian perspective on dignity postulates the necessity to formulate dignity in terms of duties towards the other. The theory of workplace dignity combines these two and explains that everything in the workplace has dignity, and that people have a duty to respect, protect, and promote dignity in the workplace. The chapter finishes by discussing how dignity manifests at the relational level.

Chapter 4. Introducing Workplace Dignity to Management Studies
Abstract
This chapter discusses the links between workplace dignity and various established workplace concepts, such as stakeholder management, ideas of profit maximization, and counterproductive work behaviors. Subsequently, this chapter explains how workplace dignity becomes salient in organizations, and whether violation of dignity has the same connotations as the absence of dignity in the workplace. Finally, the chapter discusses workplace dignity in relation to some of the prominent debates in the contemporary management literature, such as on leadership, proactivity, job crafting, and work engagement.

Chapter 5. Implementing Workplace Dignity in Organizations
Abstract
This chapter discusses the main theoretical perspectives through which dignity can be linked to other concepts in organizations, including stakeholder theory. Subsequently, the chapter discusses how dignity relates to utopian ideas about work, and defines the roles of meaning and participation in relation to dignity. It also discusses dignity and short-term and long-term relationships, after which the concept of dignity is implemented in organization studies, and how it revives and enrichens existing terminology in organization studies.

Chapter 6. Dignity, Workplace Democracy, and HRM
Abstract
This chapter elaborates on the two conditions which are crucial in building dignified organizations: power-balance and learning organizations. To do so, Bal postulates that dignity can be established on the notion of democracy, as it fundamentally revolves around the redistribution of power in organizations, and creates the opportunity for learning organizations and systems. The current chapter discusses the role of democracy in establishing dignity in the workplace, and subsequently argues how this may affect activities relating to traditional human resource management: staffing, performance appraisal, development and so forth.

Chapter 7. Workplace Dignity and Individualization
Abstract
This chapter discusses the relationship between workplace dignity and individualization at work, which can be described as a paradox. The current chapter discusses how workplace dignity is defined in terms of individuality and individualization, establishes both an analysis of the underlying assumptions in contemporary management research considering the role of individualism, and presents a way forward in terms of describing the relation proper between workplace dignity and individualization.

Chapter 8. Dignity in Universities: An Example Case
Abstract
The chapter systematically analyzes current practices in universities. This current chapter aims to formulate the principles and practices of the dignified university, and thereby laying the foundation for the establishment of the dignified organization. To do so, it is first analyzed how universities in contemporary (Western) society have become the way they currently are, and subsequently the chapter outlines how universities can become more dignified using principles of workplace dignity and democracy.

Chapter 9. Moving Forward with Dignity
Abstract
This chapter discusses how dignity work can be undertaken in organizations to enhance dignity in the workplace, and to materialize the potential of dignity. It explains how the role of education is important in realizing more dignified organizations. It introduces reversed logic of hypernormalization as a key strategy not only for academics but for practitioners as well to understand how dignity may inform current practices, and how it may reverse organizational norms towards more dignified workplaces. Bal discusses how this may result in more dignified actions to counteract neoliberalism and individualism.

Chapter 10. Conclusions
Abstract

It also explains the role of duties at work, and why duties a core to human beings. Moreover, it also present a future research agenda for the investigation of how dignity manifests and interacts in the workplace.
