Abstract

Intestinal fibrosis is a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease caused by an excessive deposition of extracellular matrix components. Currently, there are no reliable scores to identify early stages of fibrosis prior to clinical symptoms. Potential biomarkers of intestinal fibrosis, including gene variants, serum microRNAs, serum extracellular matrix proteins or circulating cells (i.e. fibrocytes) have shown neither harmonious results nor specific for fibrostenosis on heterogeneous patients’ cohorts. In this work, we develop reproducible mathematical models of intestinal fibrosis activity based on continuous wavelet-based analysis of univariate and bivariate time series derived from magnetic resonance imaging on irradiated-rat models of rectitis. This approach enable us to provide clinicians with a non-invasive and reliable score of fibrosis state necessary prior to make any decision on the course of a patient’s treatment.
