Abstract

The polysilsesquioxane coatings were synthesized via the sol–gel reaction of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPMS), and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) using different kinds of acid such as phytic acid, 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, tannic acid, and hydrochloric acid as the catalysts, and investigated by 13C NMR, 29Si NMR, SEM, electrochemical techniques, and salt-spray test, respectively. It was found that four different acid-catalyzed polysilsesquioxanes were mainly composed of T2 and T3 structure, but different acids caused some differences in reaction mechanism and the relative ratio of T2 to T3 structure. The catalysis of phytic acid caused more complete polysilsesquioxanes, which had much better corrosion resistant performance than the other three acids-catalyzed polysilsesquioxanes.
