Technology is meant to make life easier and to raise its quality. Our interaction with technology should be designed according to human needs instead of us being required to adapt to technology. Even so, technology may change quickly and people and their habits change slowly. With the aim of supporting user acceptance of iTV, the focus of this book is on the usability of iTV applications. A method for developing interaction design patterns especially for new technologies is presented for the first time.

The main characteristics covered in this new approach are: systematic identification of recurrent design problems; usability as a quality criterion for design solutions; integration of designers into the pattern development process including identification of designers' needs, and iterative evaluation and optimisation of patterns to encourage designers to accept and use them; usability testing to identify proven design solutions and their trade-offs; presentation of specific design guidelines.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Technology is meant to make life easier and to raise its quality. Our interaction with technology should be designed according to human needs instead of us being required to adapt to technology. Even so, technology may change quickly and people and their habits change slowly (Norman 1988). Ease of use has been recognised as a key factor influencing users’ acceptance of new technologies, as in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework (Davis 1989; Kaasinen 2005) and in the innovation diffusion framework (Rogers 1995). This book addresses interactive digital television (iTV) as an instance of new technology. With the aim of supporting user acceptance of iTV, the focus of this book is on the usability of iTV applications.

Chapter 2. Interactive TV Applications and Their Context of Use
The aim of this section is to define and classify interactive TV applications. Classification is relevant in supplying a frame of reference within which such applications may be described and specified.

Chapter 3. Types of Design Guidance for iTV Applications
The aim of this section is to analyse and evaluate existing design guidance for iTV applications. This will serve the aim of this book by identifying the research needed for the development of iTV-specific design guidance.

Chapter 4. User Tasks and Requirements for iTV Applications
The aim of this chapter is to identify user tasks and user requirements for iTV applications in general and for enhanced TV applications in particular. The results of the analysis of users’ tasks and requirements serve the aim of this book by helping to identify typical interaction design problems calling for design patterns.

Chapter 5. Design Pattern Collection for iTV
The aim of this chapter is to define a generic framework for interaction design patterns and to present the developed collection of interaction design patterns for iTV applications. The framework for interaction design patterns is relevant in supplying a frame of reference within which the developed patterns can be understood and used.

Chapter 6. Method of Pattern Development
In Chapter 6 the method applied for the pattern development is described. To develop the presented design patterns the following steps have been taken: Identification of the designers’ requirements for iTV design guidance Identification of a hierarchy of recurrent iTV interaction design problems Investigation and implementation of various solutions of identified design problems Identification of proven solutions of identified design problems and exploration of the solutions’ design trade-offs Forming a design pattern language based on the usability test results Evaluation of the content and form of the design pattern language developed

Chapter 7. Conclusion
The aim of this chapter is to draw a final conclusion of the previous chapters and to conclude the book. Hence the following steps have been taken: A summary of the book (Section 7.1) A discussion of the applied method and the results achieved (Section 7.2) A summary of the main achievements of the book (Section 7.3) An outlook to future research (Section 7.4)
