17. Early Design Strategies for Passive Cooling of Buildings: Lessons Learned from Italian Archetypes

Abstract

In this chapter, different bioclimatic archetypes are considered throughout the Italian peninsula, covering different climate conditions, in order to analyse the local vernacular approach to space cooling. Furthermore, seven main archetypes are described in greater detail.
Considering the high increase in energy needs for space cooling and ventilation, the definition of potential passive/hybrid approaches is essential to reduce consumption in building systems to guarantee summer comfort. Thanks to the proposed list of traditional examples, a toolbox for passive cooling of buildings in Italian climates is defined and translated into contemporary early design strategies based on a performance-driven approach. Simple tools are also suggested and one is compared with the main vernacular approaches presented here.
