Abstract

Throughout history, cycles and cycle-like phenomena have shaped the dynamic behaviors of human civilizations. The United States has had a long period of prosperity, and its zenith occurred in the early twenty-first century. Since then, however, the US economic progress has been hindered by its democratic processes. During the past three decades or longer, China’s economic growth miracle has been accompanied by the worsening economical corruption and political abuses by the Chinese Communist Party government officials at each level. None of the above phenomena can be explained by the so-called Washington or Beijing Consensus. Nevertheless, all of them are determined by the nonlinear or cyclical laws that had been set when the first riverine civilizations were created thousands of years ago. More broadly, from the long-run perspective, the poverty of humans is the major incentive for them to create more wealth, and past success is the major hurdle for nations to achieve further growth and development.

It should be noted that the Maya “Long Count” calendar is not a “lunar” or lunisolar calendar, and cannot be used to predict seasonable changes, which are very important for agriculturalists, especially in areas with high degrees of latitudes. During the Late Classic period (c. AD 600–900), the Mayans began to abandon the “Long Count” calendar (Coe 1988, 114). Even though the reason behind this is still not clear, this calendar must have had some shortcomings.

Evidence suggests humans crossed the Bering Strait from Eurasia into North America over a land and ice bridge (Beringia) between 28000 and 12000 BC (Nies 1996, 6). But the precise dates and routes of the peopling of the New World are subject to ongoing debate (Ward and Stephen Davis 1999, 2).

Song (March 10, 2010) gives the following examples: Terminal No. 3 of the Beijing Capital International Airport, built for the Beijing Olympics, was finished in three years, which is not enough time for the approval process in the West. In 2008, after the Wenchuan earthquake, which hits once in a generation, China impressed the whole world by its quick response and efficient post-disaster reconstruction.

Liu Zhijun left school in his teens to take a job as a low-level bureaucrat in the railway sector. He rose rapidly after marrying the daughter of a local official in charge of railways and, after remarrying the daughter of a higher-rank official, he was eventually promoted to the head of the Railway Ministry in 2003. But he soon divorced his second wife and thereafter married a younger and more beautiful girl, in addition to having more than a dozen of mistresses.
