Abstract

The focus of this chapter is on the important issues of privacy, confidentiality, and anonymity. But it will also touch on issues around asking sensitive questions and the evidence regarding the self-administration of surveys and its utility for collecting information about sensitive topics. It will also address opportunities for trying to get beyond self-administration and improve reporting further if self-administration improves reporting. Eleanor Singer has done interesting work on the concepts of confidentiality in privacy in connection with the decennial Census. She classifies items as assessing concerns about privacy versus concerns about confidentiality, which can be a subtle distinction.
