Über dieses Buch

This book presents the potential of bacterial cellulose in the textile and fashion industry. Most of the earlier work on the bacterial cellulose was focused on the bio technology application of cellulose, but the recent urge for the need of a sustainable material in the fashion and textile industries identified the scope of the bacterial cellulose in this aspect. The unique feature of this book is that it relates the bio technological aspects of bacterial cellulose with the sustainable issues in the fashion industry.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Sustainability and Fashion
Issues with Raw Material
Abstract
Sustainability is one of the biggest issues in the textile and fashion industry. Though several government organisations and countries are taking steps to implement sustainable practices in manufacturing industries, still, the gap between the strategies and implementation is huge. This chapter details the non-sustainable aspects of the fashion industry briefly. The impact of fast fashion, various synthetic textiles material, resource depletion and their impact on eco-balance are discussed. The latter part of the chapter details the potential alternative raw material proposed for sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

Chapter 2. Bacterial Cellulose
Raw Materials and Production Methods
Abstract
This chapter details the fundamental aspects of the bacterial cellulose, history, basic production methods and various parameters to be considered during production. The contents were elaborated by specifically focusing on interdisciplinary readers, in particular, towards textile and fashion technologists. The first part of the chapter discusses the cellulose production mechanism of the bacterial strains. The various production methods along with its own merits and demerits were discussed in the second part of the chapter. The final and third part provides an in-depth analysis of different media components and their role in bacterial cellulose production.

Chapter 3. Characteristics of Bacterial Cellulose
Textile and Fashion Perspective
Abstract
The chapter details the various structural, chemical and morphological properties of bacterial cellulose in detail. In specific to the textile and fashion application, more emphasis is given on the various post-treatment processes like alkali treatment, bleaching and colouration. The effects of the post-treatment on the structural properties were analysed. In the latter section, various drying methods are discussed and the role of different drying methods on the properties of bacterial cellulose is also detailed. The potential of in-situ and ex-situ functionalisation of bacterial cellulose using different functional materials is elucidated in the end of the chapter.

Chapter 4. Applications of Bacterial Cellulose
Focus on Clothing and Accessories
Abstract
This chapter provides insight into the various applications of bacterial cellulose in real-time situations. The first part of the chapter is mainly focused on textile and clothing applications. The main focus is on fashion application but also cover, leather alternative, accessories and home textile applications. The second part of the chapter details the other applications like health care and medical, filtration, paper manufacturing, food industry, sensors, electrical component, etc.
