Fußnoten
1
Some countries use the imperial system (yards and pounds), whereas other countries prefer the metric system (meters and kilograms).

2
See Tatsumoto (2011) for a survey of the literature on standardization, including the consensus approach.

3
A turnkey system is a system that can be operated by simply turning a key. All the know-how required to operate it is already embedded in the system, so that the user does not need to have any advanced know-how.

4
In the latter half of the 1990s, the GSM standard was upgraded in order to support data communication, and the impact of this revision should be taken into consideration. Newer versions of the GSM standard, however, have always ensured upward compatibility, and GSM Phase 1 has remained influential in all versions. Therefore, this book refers to GSM Phase 1 to calculate openness.

5
Assume Subsystem A, which is comprised of two modules. Module 1 has ten sections, with 20 pages in total. The sections, however, can concern either the module itself or the interface between the two modules. When 15 pages are dedicated to the module itself and five pages to the interface, the number of pages allocated to Module 1 is adjusted as 15 + 5/2 = 17.5. Likewise, when Module 2 has five sections and 5.5 pages after adjustment, its openness is calculated as (17.5 + 5.5)/2 = 11.5.

6
The number of patents was also taken into consideration as a potential total number of design elements, but it was concluded that it would be heavily biased due to, for instance, a concentration of patent applications in a certain area.

7
Both unauthorized mobile phones and counterfeit mobile phones are collectively called guerrilla mobile phones (shānzhàijī, in Chinese). As explained in this book, this definition is applied to phone devices manufactured without government permission. It also refers to phone devices released onto the market without paying the due license fees or without passing the GSM Association’s compatibility test.

8
With respect to the base station market in China, the present analysis focuses on the GSM system. The next-generation LTE system was introduced into China in 2014, which may cause major changes in the market shares of the base station market as a whole, including all systems.
