Rock mass stabilization by bolting is an effective and economical means, which has been widely used in mining and tunnelling. Bolted joints could be subjected to two categories of movements, either opening in the direction perpendicular to the plane or shearing in the plane (Srivastava and Singh 2015; Li et al. 2016a). A case study by McHugh and Signer (1999) has indicated that the shear loading contributed significantly to the failure of anchoring systems (Li et al. 2016b). A high proportion of rock bolts have been found to be damaged due to the shearing of rock masses in high-stress condition (Li 2010). …
