All substances are poisons; there is none which is not a poison. The right dose differentiates a poison and a remedy.” This quote, from the 15th-century Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus, is credited as the origin of toxicology. It is also the basis for the practice of exposure assessment that identifies the pathways by which toxicants may reach individuals and estimates how much of a chemical an individual is likely to be exposed to and the number of persons likely to be exposed. Exposure assessment is essentially the calculation of dose- the frequency and duration of exposure to environmental contaminants. When substances are present in potentially toxic concentrations in ground water, public health and the practice of exposure assessment are inextricably linked with the science of hydrogeology. …
