Aptiv processes copper and aluminium in its coated plug-in system for wiring systems. With SMC (selective metal coating) connection technology, aluminium replaces copper wiring. This special selective metal coating is designed to prevent corrosion despite the combination of copper and aluminium. Aptiv, Delphi’s business unit for networking and autonomous driving, has already successfully tested this solution in various car models from four car manufacturers.
According to Aptiv, the new coating has already reduced the weight of automotive electrical wiring systems by up to two kilograms. Weight savings of almost 50 percent are expected in the long term. The increasingly larger wiring systems are among the heaviest parts of a vehicle. Aptiv received the US "Automotive News Pace Award" for its specially coated connector system.
