Mobility management in space-ground-integrated networks

Abstract

In recent years, space networks are gaining enormous attention from both research community and industries to support and elevate the design of reliable, robust, and efficient space and ground-integrated networks. The massive coverage capacity and broadband of satellite networks play a key role to space exploration, Internet access, navigation, and disaster/emergency control. However, the integration of space network entities present new challenges to the implementation of conventional routing protocols, resource management, and mobility management, among others. In this article, we present the opportunities and challenges in the design of mobility management solutions for space-ground-integrated networks. Then, we explore several related open issues and point out future research directions.
