In our modelling efforts the environment of an ice sheet has been formulated in a very simple way. The ice accumulation rate has been prescribed as a simple function of elevation with respect to the snow line, which itself has been assumed to be a linear function of position. In the first sections of this chapter we will discuss in more detail the basis of such approximations, and see that depending on local conditions a more sophisticated parameterization of the mass balance is sometimes required.
