Abstract

On December 13, 2016 Alexey Navalny announced on his YouTube channel that he was participating in the 2018 presidential election along with the incumbent president Vladimir Putin. His electoral campaign was guided by a large concentration of populist messages; however, this was also a time of the release of resonant video investigations into the corruption of high-ranking officials in Russia such as former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. YouTube documentaries served as triggers to mass manifestations in major Russian cities. However, they did not lead to the resignation of officials and in the end, Navalny himself was barred from participation in the election. In this chapter, I look at his populist performances on YouTube during the presidential campaign of 2016–2018 and investigate how Navalny combined different communication tactics, be it journalism, activism, and populism, in his online interactions with citizens.

Parts of this chapter were published in an open-access journal article: Glazunova, S. 2020a. “‘Four Populisms’ of Alexey Navalny: An Analysis of Russian non-systemic opposition discourse on YouTube”. All the seventy-seven videos were narrated in the Russian language. I extracted textual excerpts of Navalny’s videos from YouTube, which were mostly automatic transcriptions, the videos transcripts were further manually edited and transcribed for the content analysis.

3
The total time length of chosen videos was 10 hours, 43 minutes, and 7 seconds. The shortest video is 46 seconds long, where Navalny gives an address from Simonov’s Court. The longest video is 49 minutes and 38 seconds and describes the investigation into corruption of the former Russian PM Medvedev.

4
The views as of 2018, when the text transcripts were collected.

5
To reach an inter-coder agreement on categories with the second Russian coder I employed Krippendorff’s 𝛼 (2004) measurement. Two coders had a substantial agreement on all categories ranging from 0.7700 (“discrediting with evidence”) to 0.8825 (“call to action”).

6
On average a superficial excerpt is 197 words each. The longest excerpt within the sample is 738 words, whereas the shortest is 35 words.

7
Here and later in this chapter, all quotes from Navalny’s videos are translated from Russian by the author.

8
The shortest excerpt is 116 words, whereas the longest excerpt is 733 words, the average excerpt in the sample is 316 words.

9
The visual presence of such evidence in YouTube videos was not analysed in this book. I also did not analyse the quality of such journalistic evidence.

10
From 89 words to 1000 words, the approximate average length of the excerpts is 400 words.

11
Seventy-seven screenshots were usually the captures of the first minutes of the video, when Navalny appeared on them. Videos with other hosts were not considered.

12
Another find of Navalny’s team, and a symbol not mentioned here were sneakers that Navalny’s team found the former Prime Minister was allegedly buying. As Navalny describes in his video, this has become major evidence for further investigations. And in the following protests, people brought sneakers with them as a symbol of corruption.
