This paper deals with the design problem of a suitable network structure and the corresponding location of devices for distributed office information systems (OIS). We propose a method for the derivation of a generic network structure using a top-down analysis of the structure of an organization and of the involved communication flows. A formal basis for all possible configurations is given which simplifies the modeling task of performance analysis and which enables the network planner to find a suitable network structure starting from the generic one.
