Zusammenfassung

Mit den Abwürfen zweier US-Atombomben auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki schildert der Beitrag zunächst die historischen Hintergründe des ersten und bis heute einzigen Kriegseinsatzes von Nuklearwaffen, um daraufhin die Bedeutung des Nuklearzeitalters für die internationale Politik und die politikwissenschaftliche Forschungsdisziplin der Internationalen Beziehungen zu analysieren. Danach wird mit der nuklearen Abschreckung, dem nuklearen Tabu, der Tradition des Nichtgebrauchs und dem Konzept der Atomic Anxiety die Forschung zum seit 1945 anhaltenden Nichtgebrauch von Nuklearwaffen dargestellt. Warum Nuklearwaffen proliferieren, also Staaten ihren Besitz anstreben, wird im Anschluss daran beleuchtet. Non-Proliferation und Rüstungskontrolle sind nicht Gegenstand des Beitrags. Das Fazit gibt einen Ausblick auf künftige politische Entwicklungen und Forschungsperspektiven.

Ich verwende im Folgenden statt „Kernwaffen“ oder „Atomwaffen“ als Oberbegriff „Nuklearwaffen“ – in Anlehnung an nuclear weapons – sowie die beiden Begriffe „Atombombe“ und „Wasserstoffbombe“, um zwischen den beiden Hauptkategorien von Nuklearwaffen zu unterscheiden.

Eine noch frühere Vorahnung findet sich im 1915 erschienenen Buch All for His Country. In der Geschichte geht im Krieg zwischen den USA und Japan eine Stadt in einer gigantischen Pilzwolke unter. Ironischerweise ist die Stadt New York, die Bomben sind japanisch (Franklin 2008 [1988], S. 44). Die Bibliografie in Brians (1987) bietet einen Überblick über Nuklearwaffen und den Nuklearkrieg in der Erzählliteratur zwischen 1895 und 1984.

Schließlich existieren noch hybride Konstruktionen, in denen eine Fusionsreaktion in einer Spaltbombe zur Erhöhung der Neutronenzahl und damit der Spaltrate bzw. letztlich der Sprengkraft genutzt wird.

Der bei einer Nuklearexplosion entstehende Lichtblitz wurde jahrzehntelang in vielen strategischen Planungen auf US-amerikanischer Seite systematisch unterschätzt. Dass dieser Brände und regelrechte Feuerstürme entfacht, was vor allem in Städten verheerende Wirkungen zeitigt, wurde erst erstaunlich spät zur Kenntnis genommen und im Schadenskalkül berücksichtigt (Eden 2004).

Der Historiker Alexander Wellerstein hat mit dem Simulator NUKEMAP ein Online-Instrument zur Veranschaulichung von Nuklearwaffenexplosionen bereitgestellt. NUKEMAP stellt anhand von Landkarten den Radius des mit der Explosion einhergehenden Feuerballs, der Druckwelle, der Strahlung und der thermischen Energie dar. Ob die Hoffnung auf die „kriegsverkürzende Wirkung“ der Atombombe tatsächlich den Ausschlag zu ihrem Einsatz gab, ist umstritten. Die Kritik an diesem Narrativ argumentiert, dass die amerikanische Rivalität zu Russland bereits Einfluss auf die Entscheidung gehabt habe, wodurch die Menschen in Hiroshima und Nagasaki eben nicht die letzten Opfer des „heißen“, sondern vielmehr die ersten Opfer des Kalten Krieges gewesen seien (Jungk 1964, S. 199; Wagner 1995, S. 93). Gegenstimmen argumentieren wiederum, dass die ebenfalls existierenden Überlegungen zu einem nur taktischen Gebrauch von Atomwaffen in der Truman Administration gegen die Interpretation der Abwürfe als Einschüchterungsversuch sprechen (Bernstein 1991, S. 151, 168–170).
