We consider an optimal control of a feedback system, inspired by the operations of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Naturally, these operations are very complex, so we propose a simplified model that accommodates only the essentials of the system. ICUs face the problem of readmission requests, which correspond to cases when patients discharged from an ICU need to come back to the ICU after a random amount of time. In highly congested systems, ICU managers may have to discharge some patients earlier than their full recovery, which, in turn, increases the readmission rate [5]. Hence, our model explicitly accounts for readmissions and early discharges. …
