Abstract

The hydrodynamic mechanism of piston ring-cylinder liner is complex phenomena. It is not easy to predict performance at the design stage. The friction coefficient plays important role for the friction losses in piston ring assembly (PRA) under different operating parameters. The small cross section area of piston ring and its profile decides the friction losses under variation of loads, speeds and operating temperature of different lubricants. In the present work, effects of significant factors on friction coefficient and friction force are analyzed on reciprocating friction and wear test rig (RFWTR) by using Taguchi approach. The Taguchi method (TM) is employed for evaluate the experimental work, analyzed the effect of working parameters for the PRA and decides the influence of optimum parameters. It is found that these parameters have a significant role on PRA performance. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is performed to identify the statically significant operating parameters. The optimum level of operating parameters is obtained from the analysis. All the parameters have equal contributions in the performance of engine efficiency, friction coefficient etc. Experimental results are provided to validate the suitability of the proposed approach.
