Abstract

The multiplicity of uncertainty indicators and the invariance of the spread in measured values relative to their shift, as well as the mechanisms for the formation of uncertainty, are examined in order to validate a new approach to evaluating measurement uncertainty. The basic initial assumptions for the proposed method of estimating uncertainty are presented.

Here the term “intralaboratory measurements” is contrasted, not so much with interlaboratory (between labs) measurements, as with measurements (of the same quantity) carried out in different links in the chain of traceability.

Several additional influence factors (sources of uncertainty) are introduced in Ref. 3, but they mainly refer to the first two links of the chains of traceability and are not considered here.

In general, an experiment must include several stable measured samples covering the necessary measurement range. For a preliminary estimate of the uncertainty, however, two or three samples are sufficient.

The demands on the accuracy of the estimate for the values of the uncertainty, as of the measured values for the samples, are low in this case.
