Mercedes-Benz Trucks has presented the third generation of its OM 471 commercial vehicle diesel engine, which is used in the Actros and Arocs models, among others. The new features of the in-line six-cylinder engine include the geometry of the piston bowl as well as the injection nozzle design and the cylinder head parameters relevant for gas exchange. The compression ratio increases from 18.3 : 1 to 20.3 : 1, the peak ignition pressure is 250 bar. In addition, an engine oil pressure control valve is used, with an electric actuator enabling the map-controlled use of the pressure reducing valve. An engine oil with low viscosity has also been developed. The OM 471 is available in a fuel-efficient version for long-distance haulage with a maximum of 350 kW and in a more powerful version for the heavy-duty and construction segment with 390 kW.
