The electronic structure of bulk semiconductors is characterized by delocalized electronic states and by a quasi continuous spectrum of energies in the conduction and valence bands. In semiconductor nanostructures, when the electrons are confined in small regions of space in the range of a few tens of nanometers or below, the energy spectrum is profoundly affected by the confinement, with in particular: an increase of the width of the bandgapthe allowed energies become discrete in zero-dimensional (OD) systems and form mini-bands in 1D and 2D systems.
