Recovery and valorization of crushed concrete and glass waste in road construction in Morocco

Abstract

Waste represents significant quantities and can be utilized in various geotechnical applications, such as road works. On the other hand, excavation works typically generate quantities of clayey excavated materials that do not meet the required technical specifications for use as backfill. This subject proposes to study the influence of adding glass waste and concrete waste on the evolution of the mechanical characteristics of stabilized clays. The combination of XRD and infrared spectroscopy will provide comprehensive information on the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of the waste materials. This knowledge is crucial for evaluating the potential impact of incorporating glass waste and concrete waste on the mechanical behavior of stabilized clays. The work involves conducting oedometer tests, CBR (California Bearing Ratio) tests using the Casagrande method, and Proctor tests on the natural clay used as a reference, as well as mixtures of clay-glass and clay-concrete. It was found that adding glass and concrete to the clay reduces the swelling and settling indices and modifies the inherent characteristics of the clay.
