The extent to which religion influences political processes is an important question. Equally tantalizing however, and inextricably linked, is the possibility that such debates on contemporary history may be to a certain extent shaped by the context in which they occur. Therefore, instead of offering a single strand of analysis, this essay will take as its point of departure the development of theory in South Africa during the eighties and nineties.
