The traditional two-step procedure of ultrasonic inspection, that is searching and analyzing, is discussed in correspondence to the data acquisition process in terms of information and criteria needed. Amplitude and sound path monitoring are the characteristic criteria for the searching process and additional phase information for the defect analysis. The techniques discussed in this context are the traditional searching technique with gating amplitude and recently sound path information, the ALOK-technique as searching and potentially analyzing technique with selected A-scan-amplitudes and sound path information as well as acoustic holography and SAFT as analyzing techniques relying upon amplitude and phase and partly sound path information.
