As the consumption of renewable energy increases and the number of electric cars grows, the worldwide demand for new types of energy storage is also rising. Scientists at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg are taking part in the three-year R2RBattery research project, which involves investigating a concept for developing ALUMINIUM-ION BATTERIES. Nine partners are taking part in the project under the leadership of the TU. Lithium-ion batteries, which are the most efficient systems currently available, dominate the market for mobile energy storage. But due to limited reserves the raw material is becoming increasingly expensive. There is a need for alternative storage technologies and material systems with high energy densities that use readily available raw materials. This is where the R2RBattery project comes in. To select suitable materials, the scientists have used a material assessment algorithm for electrochemical energy storage systems developed as part of the completed CryPhysConcept project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. …
