Let us suppose we want to determine the porosity of a Permian sandstone encountered in a large number of wells located in the North Sea. Having measured this property, using some appropriate technique, we might locate the value obtained on a map to see how the porosity of the sandstone varies over the whole basin. In addition, we may want to characterise the whole sandstone body by some sort of average, together with a parameter to define the spread of porosity values. This variation in the porosity is a real property. It is one of the characteristics of the sandstone body and might for example, relate to variations in grain size and cementation of the rock.
