Despite having only been published 3 years ago, Matthew Desmond’s widely acclaimed book (Desmond, 2016), “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” has been cited more than 700 times as of June, 2019 (Google Scholar)—and for good reason. It is wonderful and thought-provoking account of poverty in the mid-west of the USA. Although several nice reviews of this book currently exist (Harding, 2017; Hochstenbach, 2018; Immergluck, 2017; Squires, 2018), relevant research and comments about this book from an Eastern perspective are rare. Starting with a summarization and basic analysis of the book, this review addresses this oversight by discussing the issue of housing (in)justice in combination with the Chinese experience and directs the readers’ attention to this critical global issue. …
