Supporting Plastic Selection by the knowledge-based Database Front-End BAKUS

BAKUS is the German abbreviation of “Beratungssystem zur Auswahl von Kunststoffen”. This is a consulting system to support plastic selection. BAKUS represents a knowledge-based front-end to a given database for plastic materials, which are applied within Siemens. The selection process is not only supported by an object-oriented user interface in windows-technique, but also by the representation of knowledge about selection and application of plastics. Knowledge-based material selection systems, which have been developed during the last years, are all marked by the integration of a material database with an expert system.
