Abstract
In this sampling method, the first unit is selected by using a random number and the rest of the units are selected by a predetermined pattern. This method is called systematic sampling. Suppose a population consists of N units which are serially numbered from 1 to N. Population size N is expressed as the product of two integers k and n, where n is the sample size and k is a sampling interval such that \(N=nk\). Also, \(k=\frac{N}{n}\) and it is an integer. Firstly, we select one unit, r, at random from 1 to k, then every kth unit is selected automatically. The initial unit r is called random start. Thus, systematic sample \(S=\{r, r+k, r+2k, \ldots , r+(n-1)k\}\) of size n is selected. The probability of selecting each of the k possible systematic samples is \(\frac{1}{k}\). For example, \(N=300, n=10\), so \(k=\frac{300}{10}=30\). Select a random number from 1 to 30; for instance, if it is 3, then the units selected are 3, 33, 63, 93, 123, 153, 183, 213, 243, 273.
