David Avnir has been a very active member of the sol–gel community for the past 30 years. Over these years he has promoted the concept that merging of the chemistry and physics of organic bio-organic molecules with the world of sol–gel materials is bound to lead to many interesting new materials with many useful functionalities. This pioneering concept has indeed led to applications in diverse fields, many of which were first demonstrated in his laboratory. Examples are materials for optics, including filters, colored coatings, luminescent materials, photochromic materials, and more; reactive materials, including chemical sensors, efficient catalysts, reagents and photocatalysts; bioactive materials, including enzymatically active matrices, biosensors and films for cell growth; and special adsorbents, including ion-exchangers, indicating materials, chemical sponges, immunoadsorbents, chirally imprinted materials, and the list is long.
