Abstract

This study analyses the natural sources of radon and assesses their potential for the development of medical and ecological tourism as an important aspect of sustainable development in the Leningrad region. The benefits and detriments that radon can bring to human health have been studied. An analysis of large natural sources of radon located on the territory of the Leningrad region—Lopukhinskoye Lake and Sablinskiy Natural Monument—has been carried out and its potential for tourism development has been evaluated. Creating recreational and anthropogenic complexes on their territory and arranging their organized visits will be a great stimulus for development of safe ecological tourism. The creation of medical infrastructure facilities will also have a positive impact on the health and social environment. Furthermore, promotional, publicity and health education activities for potential tourists, patients and tourism workers will have a positive impact on the sustainable development of the North West region.
