Abstract
This concluding chapter explores some of the highlights of the cases, especially those that did not proceed as the formal model predicted. It contrasts, for example, Guatemala’s decision to defend itself against Mexico’s litigation threat with China’s decision to not retaliate against Jamaica’s anti-dumping duties. Both cases have power differentials, but the weaker state acts differently in both instances. The chapter also explores the role of third parties in disputes, showing how the type of country that joins the litigation can affect the outcome. It ends with a discussion on the unique contributions that the study makes to the extant literature, as well as some of its limitations. Recommendations for the dispute settlement process are also provided, as well as some ideas for future research.
