This tutorial introduction is intended to provide an intuitive understanding of the general format of the graph grammar mechanism underlying the algebraic approach. We point out the essential role of the gluing construction and discuss basic constructions in connection with sequential and parallel independence of derivations and what to do in the case of sequential resp. parallel dependence.
