Have you ever heard of A.T.G. Gardner? No? This British Major broke new ground in November 1938 on the motorway near Frankfurt/Main in Germany; raising his existing year-old speed record of 240 km/h for vehicles of up to 1100 cm3 capacity to the then astounding 313 km/h. When race-ready, his MG weighed 750 kg. The engine had a cubic capacity of 1086 cm3 and delivered output of 140 kW at 6800 rpm. As noted in ATZ 22 (1938) on page 595, the six-cylinder engine, which featured a bore/stroke ratio of 57 × 71 mm, included a "special bronze cylinder head with a 6:1 compression ratio as well as bronze valve guides. The crankshaft has four bearings; the camshaft driven by the bevel gears and a vertical shaft operates the valves via a rocker arm". The article in ATZ, which had already been around for 40 years – to be followed a few months later by the founding of MTZ – clearly demonstrates how excited the editorial team at the time really were. …
