The price of higher education has increased dramatically over the past few decades, leaving millions of students with outstanding student loan balances. At the end of the fourth quarter of 2019, the total amount of student loan debt was listed as $1.51 trillion with the majority of this debt carried by those 18 to 29 years of age (Federal Reserve Bank of New York 2019). Because Black students tend to take out more loans for school than other racial groups, they bare more of the student loan debt burden and have difficulty paying these loans back compared with other racial groups (Espinosa et al. 2019; Kim et al. 2017). …
