The interplay of cooperation and competition is a recurrent theme in research on networks and clusters. Nevertheless, the relationship between the two remains unclear and the respective research is hardly able to inform practitioners about how to manage the tensions and contradictions involved. Therefore, two interorganizational networks in one emerging photonics cluster are investigated in depth, asking how competitors are turned into collaborators. The investigation is based upon a cognitive perspective on competition and cooperation, whose potentials to inform managerial practice are discussed as much as its limitations.
