A triple band square-interlinked-rhombus shaped metamaterial absorber for microwave C and X-band utilizations

Abstract

In this research paper, a tri-band metamaterial absorber (MMA) is suggested to cover the satisfied level of absorption in the Microwave C- and X- band regions. The suggested MMA is structured by a unit cell which is printed on the top face of the FR4_Epoxy dielectric substrate. The copper patch of the unit cell consists of an inter-coupled split ring metamaterial resonator (SIR-SRR) with a square shape for the outer ring and a rhombus shape for the inner one. The unit cell size is optimized for electrical dimensions of (0.195 \({\lambda }_{0}\times \) 0.195 \({\lambda }_{0}\times \) 0.029 \({\lambda }_{0}\)) where \({\lambda }_{0}\) is the free space wavelength and is calculated at the lowest operating frequency of 5.86 GHz. The design of the SIR-SRR has passed through five stages according to five different models to have three absorption peaks. To understand the absorber behavior, a parametric study has been executed and discussed. The obtained results for the absorption qualities of the prescribed MMA show that it has co-polarization insensitive absorptions up to 180° and incident angle stability up to 90° for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. It shows three absorption peaks of 86.23, 92.92 and 82.07% at frequencies of 5.86, 6.57 and 8.94 GHz, respectively for utilizations in microwave C- and X-bands. The proposed MMA presents effective electromagnetic qualities for microwave applications, especially for satellite, sensors and radar communications.
